My Top 5 Fragrances

Is it just me or is there something about the summer which always makes you want to buy a new men’s fragrance? Maybe it is just that everything feels more fragrant generally, or that when the weather gets as hot as it is at the moment (the heatwave of Summer 2018 which we’ll have all forgotten as soon as it rains) you want to make sure you are smelling fresh!

It might have something to do with the fact you’re more likely to be jetting on off holiday and therefore running the gauntlet through duty free, half cut after three Guinness at 7:30am and trying your best not to buy 200 cigarettes, some new aftershave and huge bag of Haribo.

But in all seriousness, it is this time of year that I take the opportunity to buy a new fragrance, and often when off on holiday. It feels like the right time to treat yourself, and if you wear it for that week or two weeks then it will forever remind you of that great holiday.

So here are my Top 5 Men’s Fragrances (particularly for summer):

Issey Miyake Water Issey Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

This is the fragrance I have been wearing the longest and my absolute go to eau de toilette. I first bought it on the way to Spain on holiday so it will forever have that holiday feel for me. It epitomises a good summer fragrance, fresh, light but strong with woody citrus tones.

The Boat No.1 Dolce and Gabbana

Perfume 1 Le BateleurI can’t remember how I came across this fragrance and it is quite difficult to get hold of now but it is one of my absolute favourites. I tend to treat it a bit more as one for special occasions and although perfectly nice as a day to day wear, it has more of an evening or “going out” feel to it. In line with my preferred sort of scents it has a cool and a cool and aquatic feel with hints of cardamom, coriander and cedarwood.

Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue Eau de Toilette

This was another holiday purchase, this time on the way to Mexico, so again it really reminds me of that holiday and has an exotic feel. It oozes class and sophistication with a distinctive but comfortable aroma. Again, I wear it more as an evening scent and for special occasions. It has woody aroma with qualities of natural citrus, bergamot and grapefruit combined with modern hints of fig leaf which gives it a Mediterranean freshness. Described as having aquatic notes with a citrus tang.

Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Chinotto Liguria Eau de Toilette Spray

BuyAcqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Chinotto Liguria Eau de Toilette Spray, 75ML Online at johnlewis.comAnother sophisticated, light and aquatic scent in line with my taste. I expect you can see a theme developing here! But for me a fragrance is all about freshness. Described as “a perfect memory of a sunny morning walk overlooking the sea” it has the scent of bitter Chinotto and Mandarin trees. There are touches of Jasmine and Geranium and refreshing,  energetic notes of Rosemary and Cardamom. Finally, Patchouli and Musk evoke “the silence and peace of an untouched nature for a pure moment of well being.” A real holiday scent if ever there was one.

HUGO BOSS BOSS Bottled Eau de Toilette

BuyHUGO BOSS BOSS Bottled Eau de Toilette, 50ml Online at johnlewis.comAn absolute stalwart of men’s fragrances and a real classic. For me this is a real day to day scent. Launched 20 years ago, it still holds its own today. Elegant, woody accords develop hour by hour and the scent unfolds and takes on a different quality that inspires and stays throughout his day. It is a fragrance which remains as contemporary and relevant today as it was at launch 20 years ago: “a symbol of masculinity that has been effortlessly incorporated into the daily routines of men around the world.”
