EXCLUSIVE – Interview with Sleaford Mods

Bored. As the world ends around us in a Coronavirus apocalypse. I decided to tweet out some of my old blog posts. The original “5 Brands I’d Never Be Seen Dead In.”

Who goes and tweets a reply… only Sleaford Mods. Well blow me down. I thought I’d be cheeky and asked if they would do a little Q &A for my measly blog. They only said yes.

It’s an absolute pleasure to talk you; I’ve been a huge fan of your music from the beginning. Before we get on to clothes… Jolly Fucker is an all-time favourite, why is it hard to find on Spotify and the like?

IT’S BEEN OFFLINE SINCE WE TOOK ‘CHUBBED UP’ OFF SPOTIFY. I FORGET WHY WE DID HAHA BUT IT’LL BE BACK ONLINE VERY SOON.

So you kindly agreed to have a chat after we exchanged tweets about certain brands… how important is clothing and menswear to you? And why?

DRESSING IN GOOD STUFF HAS ALWAYS INTERESTED ME. SKINT OR NOT, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MUST. IT CARRIES YOU NICELY IF YOU GET IT RIGHT. IT’S STILL AN ID TAG FOR ME.

How do you see fashion and clothing fitting into society from a cultural point of view? And particularly in what many see as your irreverent view of the world.

I WAS NEVER ONE OF THESE LET’S DRESS IN COMMANDO BOATS AND WEAR BLACK TYPE PEOPLE. I LIKE CLOTHES BUT I DON’T THINK THAT MEANS I’M TOTALLY USELESS AND BOUGHT. I’M A HIGH STREET CONSUMER, I’VE BOUGHT INTO THE IDEA OF BRANDS BUT SO WHAT. I’M AWARE ITS NOT NECESSARILY A GOOD THING BOTH MENTALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SPEAKING BUT IT’S MY CHOICE . YOU CAN STILL HAVE OPINIONS EVEN IF YOU’VE COMMITTED TO STUPIDITY. HAHA.

Would it be a correct assumption that the band name came from an affinity with the mod scene? If so, what is it about the mod scene that you relate to?

CLOTHES. MUSIC. BANDS. IT WAS AN IDENTITY AT THE TIME WHICH GAVE YOU THE CHANCE TO THINK ABOUT THOSE THINGS AND BE THOSE THINGS. IT WAS YOUR RIGHT TO DO THAT BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED BY PEOPLE YOU UNDERSTOOD AND WERE FAMILIARISED WITH.

I have always thought fashion, clothes, are hugely important as it is a way of showcasing a sense of self…. an identity. This is why I was drawn to mod and casual clothing, something about standing out, having standards, looking sharp. Is there anything in that do you think?

YEA I THINK SO. I DON’T KNOW IF IT’S MOD ANYMORE THOUGH. IT’S BEEN TRANSFERRED TO WHATEVER IS GOING ON NOW IN STREET CULTURE.

I am pretty vocal about the brands I don’t like, what do you wear and enjoy, brand wise, and why?

LOADS OF STUFF. ACG MAINLY AT THE MINUTE. I STAY WITH BRANDS TOO. ALWAYS GOT TIME FOR PAUL SMITH, UNIVERSAL WORKS, GUCCI, APC. 6876. I LIKE ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

Any hidden gems, independents or unknowns from a clothing point of view that you love and think more people should be aware?

I LIKE SOME OF THAT LIBERTINE-LIBERTINE KIT. REALLY NICE STUFF. ALSO 6876. ITS BEEN GOING AGES BUT STILL HAD NICE BITS IN. THEN THERE’S THE MORE OBVIOUS STUFF OUT THERE. I LIKE HIGH FASHION SHIT. ITS VULGAR BUT LOOKS WICKED HAHA.

What’s coming up for the band, bearing in mind the end of the world is nigh?

HAHA. YEA. WE GOT A RETROSPECTIVE ALBUM OUT IN MAY ‘All That Glue’ WHICH CONTAINS ALL THE ‘HITS’ PLUS SOME UNRELEASED STUFF. SHOULD BE GOOD.

Really appreciate your time – any final words for us?

TAKE CARE.

Legends. Cheers Sleaford Mods.
